Excerpt from Coffee: From Plantation to Cup; A Brief History of Coffee Production and ConsumptionI have endeavored to tell the story of coffee in a practical way, so as to make the information valuable alike to consumers and dealers. I have been induced to add to the innumerable com pany Of books from the fact that there seemed to be a want for a work which, besides furnishing statistical and historical matter relative to the coffee-plant, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the world's coffee supply, and the mode of preserving and preparing the coffee-bean so as to best secure all those qualities which make coffee the favorite beverage with most Of the civilized nations of the earth. My reliance has been chiefly upon twenty years' experience as a dealer, and such in formation as was to be gathered from a trip around the world. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to many books for facts re garding coffee culture, and historical matter relating thereto, and also to a large circle of business acquaintances for valuable statis tical information. To mention them specifically is hardly pos sible, and would be of little interest to the general reader. It is, however, but just that I should here recognize the many courtesies.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Brief History of Vice: How Bad Behavior Built Civilization
A Brief History of Vice: How Bad Behavior Built
A celebration of the brave, drunken pioneers who built our civilization one seemingly bad decision at a time, A Brief History of Vice explores a side of the past that mainstream history books prefer to hide. History has never been more fun—or more intoxicating. Guns, germs, and steel might have transformed us from hunter-gatherers into modern man, but booze, sex, trash talk, and tripping built our civilization. Cracked editor Robert Evans brings his signature dogged research and lively insight to uncover the many and magnificent ways vice has influenced history, from the prostitute-turned-empress who scored a major victory for women’s rights to the beer that helped create—and destroy—South America's first empire. And Evans goes deeper than simply writing about ancient debauchery; he recreates some of history's most enjoyable (and most painful) vices and includes guides so you can follow along at home. You’ll learn how to: • Trip like a Greek philosopher. • Rave like your Stone Age ancestors. • Get drunk like a Sumerian. • Smoke a nose pipe like a pre–Columbian Native American.“Mixing science, humor, and grossly irresponsible self-experimentation, Evans paints a vivid picture of how bad habits built the world we know and love.”—David Wong, author of John Dies at the End

Texas Jack's Famous Cold Brew Coffee Recipes: With A Brief History On Coffee
Texas Jack's Famous Cold Brew Coffee Recipes: With A Brief History On
I have always associated cold coffee and iced coffee with those coffee chains and their pretentiousness, fancy names, flavorings, and let’s not mention the prices. With that said, I hadn’t given cold brew coffee a chance. Being in Texas and with our brutally hot and humid summers, especially down here in Houston, cold brew coffee is almost a necessity during those “walking on the sun” days. My first experience to iced coffee was a disaster. On one of those hell on earth days one of the guys ran down to the corner convenience store and brought back several cups of iced coffee for the crew. My first impression? Awful, nothing more than a bitter, watered down version of what coffee should be. When I voiced my thoughts, good old Buck said, “What you expect for dollar Texas Jack?” A few days later, over lunch with a friend at a Pho restaurant, I mentioned my experience when asked if I wanted to try a Vietnamese iced coffee. He said, “Give it a chance Texas Jack.” So, reluctantly I caved in. I was served this concoction, a tall glass with a caramel looking drink with ice. After my first sip, and much to my amazement, I was sent to another plane of existence, a parallel universe where, for a moment, I was in culinary bliss. It was satisfyingly rich in flavor and sweet but not too sweet, understated yet it had nuances that I have never experienced before. After coming back to reality, I insisted that I meet the sage responsible for creating such a divine drink. I was taken behind the bar where the barista walked me through the process. I felt that the heavens had parted and I was being allowed to gaze upon some esoteric and forbidden knowledge. It was revealed that it was cold brew coffee, coarse ground coffee steeped in cold water then strained into a glass with a tables [read more]

The Air from Other Planets: A Brief History of Architecture to Come
The Air from Other Planets: A Brief History of Architecture to
In The Air from Other Planets, Sean Lally introduces the reader to an architecture produced by designing the energy within our environment ( electromagnetic, thermodynamic, acoustic, and chemical ). This architecture exchanges the walls and shells we have assumed to be the only type of attainable architecture for a range of material energies that develops its own shapes, aesthetics, organizational systems, and social experiences. The book is a story in which energy emerges as more than what fills the interior of a building or reflects off its outer walls. Instead, energy becomes its own enterprise for design innovation: it becomes the architecture itself. The Air from Other Planets is a book nostalgic for the future, rooted in the belief that the architect's greatest attributes lie not only in harnessing the latest technologies and advancements in building materials, but also in exercising our imaginations through speculation and the projections of worlds and environments yet to exist. The book shows us that some of our greatest discoveries come not from seeking something new but from re-examining what we already have around us.
